Robot Chicken co-creator Matt Senreich says he hasn’t had any run-ins with celebrities irate over their depictions on the late-night stop-motion animated Adult Swim show.
“They’ve been pretty good about it,” he said, chuckling via phone.
The show, which featured its 100th episode this past Sunday night, regularly lampoons the likes of Britney Spears, Ryan Seacrest (repeatedly and viciously) and multiple 80s icons that include the toys and animated series of that era. And Santa Claus … uh, I mean George Lucas.
Subjects can’t say they aren’t warned. This admonition states it plainly before each episode: “Any names or likenesses of celebrities are used in a fictitious and parodic manner.” Note the “and.”
In its very skewering of pop culture, this series actually is showing love. Tough love, sometimes, but love nevertheless. And its fans love it; so much so that Robot Chicken: Season 5 — with a sticker on the box that says “Never on TV. Yet.” — was released to stores in October before the season was even over.
